Book Beginnings Friday: Jane by April Lindner

"The chairs in the lobby of Discriminating Nannies, Inc., were less comfortable than they looked. I sat stiffly in the one nearest the exit, where I could watch the competition come and go, feeling like an imposter in my gray herringbone suit from Goodwill.  "

-JANE  BY APRIL LINDNER
Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Poppy (October 11, 2010)

Forced to drop out of an esteemed East Coast college after the sudden death of her parents, Jane Moore takes a nanny job at Thornfield Park, the estate of Nico Rathburn, an iconic rock star on the brink of a huge comeback. Practical and independent, Jane reluctantly becomes entranced by her magnetic and brooding employer, and finds herself in the midst of a forbidden romance. But there's a mystery at Thornfield, and Jane's much-envied relationship with Nico is tested by a torturous secret from his past.

Part irresistible romance and part darkly engrossing mystery, this contemporary retelling of the beloved classic Jane Eyre promises to enchant a new generation of readers.

(I've read Jane Eyre a million times.  I was a little leery about how this retelling could possibly live up to the original. But I have to say, so far, I am loving it. It's very loyal to Charlotte Bronte's storyline but somehow also feels entirely new. Honestly, I can't put this one down! And that cover is just beautiful. I think it fits Jane's personality and the story so well.)

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading.

Book Review: Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

RAISED BY WOLVES BY JENNIFER LYNN BARNES

Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 432 pages
Publisher: EgmontUSA (June 8, 2010)
Language: English
Purchase: Amazon | Indiebound |Barnes & Noble

Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two.

But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs.

But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?

Book Opening:

"BRONWYN ALESSIA ST. VINCENT CLARE!"

Four names, five words, one pissed-off werewolf. The math in this particular equation never came out in my favor.

"Callum," I said, feigning surprise at his sudden appearance in my workshop. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Notable Scene:

"He'd said it himself. I smelled like Pack, but I also smelled like meat. Now that he'd Shifted, it was anyone's guess as to which would matter more.

He's in a cage, I reminded myself, but the words meant nothing to me, because I just couldn't stop staring into his wild eyes and playing the last words he'd said before he Shifted, over and over again.

I got bit.

I got bit.

I got bit. "
-Page 60-61 "

"Come out, come out, wherever you are, little one. No sense hiding from the Big Bad Wolf. I’ll always find you in the end…"

Fifteen-year-old Bryn remembers little about her life before the Pack.  But the rogue werewolf who slaughtered her parents still haunts her nightmares. Though Bryn has spent the last 11 years living in the Pack, she distances herself from the wolves—from their politics, their restrictive rules and their shared emotional Pack bond. When she meets Chase, a newly turned werewolf, Bryn's safe world tumbles down all around her. As new memories begin to bubble to the surface, Bryn realizes that until she uncovers the truth, she won't ever be able to move on. What really happened the night she was found? And why does it seem as if everyone is afraid of her uncovering the truth once and for all?

Jennifer Lynn Barnes infuses new life into the werewolf genre with this fast-paced, engrossing novel.  With compelling characters and a well-written, unique take on wolves, this book is now officially my new favorite paranormal wolf saga. Headstrong and impulsive, Bryn was a fierce protagonist. I loved the way she let nothing stop her as she crusaded for the truth.  The rules of the Pack fascinated me—the bonds, the laws, the instinctual reactions of the wolves I devoured every last morsel and was still hungry for more.

RAISED BY WOLVES has a primal, almost feral feel to it. In order to survive among wolves, Bryn had to harden herself. She had to be strong. If she didn't rebel, if she didn't maintain her independence, she would've lost a part of who she really was to the conformity of the Pack. I admired Bryn; I knew right from the start she was a special girl and I couldn't wait to discover where her story would take me next. She underwent a lot of growth throughout the course of this book and I literally could not tear myself away from it. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. When I was reading it, I didn't want it to end. Though largely underdeveloped, I adored Chase as well. My only complaint was that the two were separated for most of the book. I was dying for more interaction from the two of them. Then again, the focus of the book was not romance. It was about Bryn's journey for answers.

Another character important to note was Ali, Bryn's surrogate mother. Ali was AMAZING. Even now, this character still lingers on in my memory. Ali was one tough-as-nails lady. Even after everything she had been through, she possessed tremendous strength. Though Bryn wasn't her real daughter, Ali loved her with a ferocious protectiveness that  brought tears to my eyes. When the twins came along, I thought some of the most vivid, descriptive moments were in the depictions of Katie, thebaby wolf-girl who loved shifting into her puppy wolf form. I could just imagine her Baby Gap outfits ripping when she transformed into her wolf shape and  I could practically feel her puppy breath upon my face. Katie was a character to instantly fall in love with and added so much extra to the narrative.

RAISED BY WOLVES was a thrilling, suspenseful saga of a young girl's struggle to live among werewolves without losing her true human identity. As you can surmise from my review, I thought this was a kick-butt, fiery novel that truly separated itself "from the Pack." I am most anxiously awaiting TRIAL BY FIRE, due out the summer of 2011.

I'd highly recommend RAISED BY WOLVES to paranormal fantasy fans, particular those of Patricia Briggs or Kelley Armstrong.

Book Review: When Rose Wakes by Christopher Golden

WHEN ROSE WAKES BY CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN
Reading level: Young Adult
Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: MTV; Original edition (September 28, 2010)
Language: English
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Indiebound

Her terrifying dreams are nothing compared to the all-too-real nightmare that awaits. . . .

Ever since sixteen-year-old Rose DuBois woke up from months in a coma with absolutely no memories, she’s had to start from scratch. She knows she loves her two aunts who take care of her, and that they all used to live in France, but everything else from her life before is a blank.Rose tries to push through the memory gaps and start her new life, attending high school and living in Boston with her aunts, who have seriously old world ideas. Especially when it comes to boys. But despite their seemingly irrational fears and odd superstitions, they insist Rose not worry about the eerie dreams she’s having, vivid nightmares that she comes to realize are strangely like the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The evil witch, the friendly fairies, a curse that puts an entire town to sleep—Rose relives the frightening story every night. And when a mysterious raven-haired woman starts following her, Rose begins to wonder if she is the dormant princess. And now that she’s awake, she’s in terrible, terrible danger. . .

Opening Line:
"Rose woke with the echoes of bad dreams like cobwebs in her mind and the memory of a kiss still upon her lips. Through slitted eyes she could see only the gauzy haze of dim lights, and when she tried to move every inch of her protested with an ache that went down to the bone. "
When Rose Wakes

Notable Scene:

"As the Black Heart passed one classroom and then another she seemed to flicker in and out of sight, perhaps even in and out of reality. One step she would be there and the next she would not. Rose could only start, riveted to the spot as she tried to think." page 297

WHEN ROSE WAKES was an intriguing book with a unique take on a classic fairy tale. But before I dive into this review, I need to point out one important thing. This synopsis reveals way too much!  I wish I had been able to uncover the enticing details of the plot for myself, including the evil witch, friendly fairies, the curse, etc--basically all the magic and excitement spelled out in the synopsis.

With that being said, I still greatly enjoyed this book. Throughout the narrative, the reader is transported into the dream-like world of Rose's past. These were my favorite parts of the book and I looked forward to each new glimpse into Rose's sad history.  I thought the way Christopher Golden incorporated elements from Sleeping Beauty was highly creative. I wanted to learn more about the mysterious "Feywood" and its inhabitants called the "Ladies of the Wood". These scenes were so vivid I felt like I was pulled out of my chair and plopped smack dab into a medieval kingdom plagued with war and dark magic. I could feel the biting cold as Rose ran into the snow drenched forest. I could practically hear the whirling of Rielle the fairy sprite's wings as she darted frantically around, desperate to warn Rose about her fate from the "Dark Lady". And I felt all the pain of Rose's father and the predicament he found himself within. This was a man who knew no matter what he did to keep his daughter safe, in the end, he would lose her forever. I only wish there could've been time to explore this in more detail.

Though Rose had so much to deal with upon waking from a two-year coma, I thought she handled herself impressively.  Even though she did not think of herself as anything more than the bumbling "Coma Girl", I could tell she possessed the heart of a true princess. Strong, loyal and courageous, Rose did not let anyone walk all over her. I loved the way she stood up to bullies at the school. The things she did to put them in their place awed me and made me wish I had been friends with her in high school.  Rose's Aunt Fay and Aunt Suzette were extremely well thought out characters as well.  I knew they were holding back some crucial information, but couldn't ever quite put it all together. They also had quite a few personality quirks with their odd tea concoctions and the way they were terrified of Rose "meeting boys". Initially it confused me, but in the end it all made perfect sense and I ended up appreciating their characters even more. Rose's friendships with Kaylie and Dom added some humor to the plot line, and I enjoyed Kaylie's witty one-liners. The romance between Rose and Jared was delicious.  Golden wrote their scenes together so well they dripped with tension.

WHEN ROSE WAKES had an extremely clever ending, but I'm not sure that I was completely satisfied with it. I had so many questions; so much more I wanted to delve into and explore. Since so much of the book was dedicated to Rose coming to terms with what she really was, I often felt impatient with her to "catch up" with the information I already knew.  But again, that reverts back to the synopsis giving too much away.  I also felt like the book wrapped up rather quickly. I wanted her to have the quintessential "happily ever after".  While the ending was hopeful, I found myself hoping for something more definitive. But I guess life isn't always like a fairy tale, right?

Despite the spoilery synopsis, I greatly enjoyed this book. WHEN ROSE WAKES lulled me in and captivated my heart from the first few pages. With a contemporary twist, it's sure to appeal to fans of fantasy and fairy tale retellings.

INTERVIEW

When Rose Wakes is a story about a teenager who wakes up from a coma and realizes she is connected to the Sleeping Beauty of fairy tales.  Can you tell us a little more about the book, and perhaps share with us a favorite line, scene or passage?

Rose doesn't realize anything right away.  When she wakes from her coma, she has lost her memory.  Though the doctors tell her she should recover it, basically the only thing she recognizes is the two women who are her aunts.  She knows them.  They take her home and enroll her in school and tell her that her memory will return in time.  Meanwhile, without her memory, she has to discover a great many things about the world and about herself and what kind of person she is.  But Rose is also plagued with wonderful and terrible dreams about an endangered kingdom and a fairy forest and a dark power that bears her dreadful malice, and over time, she begins to wonder if there might be some truth to her dreams.  As for my favorite line, probably the very first line in the book:  "Rose woke with the echoes of bad dreams like cobwebs in her mind and the memory of a kiss still upon her lips."

What three words do you think best describe your novel?

Cruel!  No, not the novel...you, for asking such a question.  :)  Let's see...Intriguing.  Thrilling.  Surprising.

What was your inspiration for When Rose Wakes-- can you give us any insight into that first spark that formed the idea for the novel? Did the book grow and change tremendously from that initial first draft?

Like a lot of modern writers, I revise as I write, so by the time I'm done with a "first draft," it's really more like a third draft.  But what happened on WHEN ROSE WAKES, and what nearly always happens with my books, is that I discover new things, new elements, new plot twists as I write.  It's like an archaeologist discovering the top of an artifact and carefully excavating it.  That always requires me to make significant changes to the first half of the book to reflect changes in plot or character that I've made in later portions.  It keeps the storytelling process interesting when you can keep discovering new facets of your own story.  As for the inspiration...I can't honestly say.  It's propitious that the book is coming out at a time when these fairy tale reimaginings are growing popular again, but my inspiration had nothing to do with that.  I wanted to do something fantasy, but that took place in the real world.  So often with my work I like to take myths and legends and turn them over and examine them from a different perspective, to ask the question, "What if this was real?"

Numerous retellings of classic fairy tales and novels continuously pop up in books and movies with ever increasing popularity. As a writer, why do you think this genre is so appealing for so many people?

There's a comfort that comes from our shared familiarity with the classic stories.  At the same time, they are SO familiar that they allow for storytellers to come up with riffs on them that rely entirely upon that familiarity.  You could come to WHEN ROSE WAKES with no knowledge whatsoever of Sleeping Beauty and totally understand the story.  But knowing Sleeping Beauty, at least the basic tale, makes the twists of the novel much more intriguing...at least to me, and I hope to readers.  It's also just fun to warp the classics, and readers enjoy that sense of playfulness.

What was the most challenging aspect of bring When Rose Wakes to life?

To answer that truthfully would be to give too much away.  All I'll say is this.  Anytime you're writing urban fantasy, you have to make a decision about magic.  If you want the book to feel real, you have to be very careful about how much magic you include, and what kind, and how it is portrayed.

If When Rose Wakes was to be made into a movie, do you have certain actors you envision in the lead roles or do you think unknowns would be best suited to play them?

There's actually some conversation about that going on right now, though nothing I can officially report.  As for actors....that's always a tough call.  But given how long it takes to get a movie optioned, written, and put into production, I think Chloe Grace Moretz would be old enough by then to play Rose.  She's fearless.  A very talented girl.

From your Body of Evidence series for adults to Buffy The Vampire Slayer books, you have written numerous novels and contributed to comics and anthologies in a wide variety of genres. Out of your collective works, is there one book or character that you had the strongest connection with and enjoyed writing the most?

It's funny, actually.  Partially because I wrote her more than any other character (of my own), my strongest connection is to Jenna Blake, the main character of the Body of Evidence series.  I've been teased for saying so, but of all of my characters, Jenna is probably the most like me.  Yes, she's an eighteen year old girl.  But other than that!  :)

Of all your novels, if you had to become one of your characters and be transported into their world for just one day, who would you choose and why?

Cool.  No one's every asked me that before.  I'd want to be Oliver Bascombe, the main character in my Veil trilogy of fantasy novels (THE MYTH HUNTERS, THE BORDERKIND, THE LOST ONES).  He lives in world of wonder and adventure.  Sure, it's also a world of great danger, but it would be worth it to be able to see the things that he gets to see, the monsters and the creatures of myth and legend, the impossible places, the grand ambitions, the lost civilizations.  Yeah.  No question.

What types of feedback do you receive from readers? Is there one comment in particular that has really affected and stayed with you?

The best are the ones that have written to tell me that they never read for pleasure (just for school assignments) before reading my books, but now they love to read.  Once a girl wrote to tell me that her mother wanted to thank me, because after reading my books and getting invested in reading, she went from a D+ to an A in English class.  Those things will stay with me my whole life.

What can we look forward to from you next? Do you have any new series or projects in the works?

My next YA books are a series called THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON, which I'm writing with the wonderfully talented Tim Lebbon.  The first book in the series, THE WILD, will be out in hardcover from HarperCollins in March, with beautiful illustrations by Greg Ruth.  Fox2000 has just optioned the movie rights, and Tim and I are writing the screenplay while we work on the second book.

He was done growing long ago. When senior year starts, however, the pain only gets worse. The foreseen changes are not expected, and far too animal for his taste. When Max Gordon found himself standing above the dying body of an innocent seven-year-old girl, he saw in her eyes something he hadn't seen in the century he'd spent roaming Earth. Her father was already dead, but there was hope to save her. Jane was her name, and already she was all he ever wanted. It was his job to bring her back, and it was his job to protect her - the biggest mistake of his life. When these four teens enter Glenwood High their senior year, no one but Max could understand the future ahead of them. Drawn together by blood and friendship, they each hide a dark secret that will soon bind them together. Max has to protect Jane, Jane wants to be normal, Wes wants Jane to love him, and Emily just wants the voices to stop... But their fate just wants them dead.
